“Welcome to Wendtmurhoefen: Book One: Long Days, Short Knights” by Bryan Beaunoyer is such an adorable story about a magical island and its newest hero, Sir Gilderlilly, or Gil for short. In the story, Princess Violet has disappeared, and her parents, King Archibald and Queen Amandovare are frantic. They send out a search party to find her, but these men disappear as well. What could be going on and is the princess okay? Not knowing the answers, the king and queen turn to the king’s oldest friend, a wizard known as Alaburton to figure out what has happened to their daughter. In turn, Alaburton discovers Gil, a young man who arrives at the castle expecting to be the wizard’s assistant but quickly finds out that he is going to be a hero instead.

As Gil is transformed into a knight for the king, he sets out into the land to find the princess and save the realm.  Meeting up with Horace, a very different but adorable unicorn, these two new friends join forces and continue the search. As the pair travels across this enchanted land they meet new friends who seemingly want to help and find a world they never knew existed outside the palace walls. Will they survive and will they ever find Princess Violet and reunite this family? For that, you will need to read the story and I can assure you it will be worth it.

Author Bryan Beaunoyer has given children and adults a fun and exciting adventure in the first book of this new series. The story is adorable and well-written, and the characters are so much fun to meet and learn about. The character Gil is excellent, and the writing conveys his confusion and fear at being given such an important task as well as his ability to learn as he goes and accept help from others. The author did a great job of showing how Gil grows into his role as the story progresses. In addition, while all the characters are great fun to read about, Horace is by far the best of the lot. This cute and strange unicorn, with magical powers you will not believe, is simply the perfect sidekick for Sir Gilderlilly on his quest. Watching them become the best of friends is so much fun. Kids and adults alike will absolutely adore this character.

“Welcome to Wendtmurhoefen” by Bryan Beaunoyer is an excellent book and a wonderful addition to children’s literature. I absolutely adored it and think that you will too. This is the type of book that will enthrall children, at least in my opinion. It will hopefully show them how wonderful reading is and keep them at it for a long time into the future. I cannot wait to see what Sir Gilderlilly, Alaburton, and Horace get up to in their next adventure. 5 Stars!
