“The Train from Outer Space” by Alan Sproles and Lizanne Southgate is about 12-year old Brady and his unwitting encounter with aliens. Brady lost his dad to a tragic car accident. The loss of his dad sent Brady into a downward spiral of self-pity in which he no longer tried to do well in school and lashed out at his only friend Franky who was only trying to help. However, all this changes one night when Brady stumbles upon an alien spacecraft and his dog, Skip, accidently picks up an alien. Brady and Franky are then sucked into helping save their planet from a wormhole as well as other evil aliens. Although the alien Brady accidently picked up may at first appear to be on his side, you never know what unexpected twists might be thrown his way by the little alien. The only way to know is to read the book!
My favorite character is Chimera, a shape-shifting alien who tries to help the humans throughout the book. She is the only consistently kind character in the book, always helping Brady and Franky from behind the scenes.
I would recommend “The Train from Outer Space” by Alan Sproles and Lizanne Southgate to people who enjoy science fiction and adventure. The characters were all interesting and made the book fun to read. Unfortunately, the plot was not always consistent and was occasionally hard to follow. Overall, the book was engaging and left room for sequels for which I will be on the lookout!
