“The Thrilling Adventures of an Extremely Boring Boy” by author James Hannon is packed full of adventure, humor, magic, and important messages for children. Stressing the importance of balance in one’s life, author James Hannon takes us on a wild ride through the main character, ten-year-old Barry Dunphy. Born to superhero parents, Barry Dunphy likes to live a regular and boring life. Although, his life is anything but ordinary. Barry lives in Ballinacrack, a town filled with trolls, witches, vampires, monsters, and superheroes! Barry goes to school at Ballinacrack Universal Multidimension School where his classes are centered around magical spells, defeating dragons, and reprogramming evil robots. In the center of Ballinacrack is a portal allowing travelers to transport themselves to other magical universes in the Multiverse. One day, Barry wakes up and every single member of Ballinacrack, including his parents, is missing. Where did they go? That’s for Barry Dunphy to find out in this magical tale.
“The Thrilling Adventures of an Extremely Boring Boy” is full of action and suspense and had me laughing one moment and spooked the next. I feel this book would appeal to children with its unique story elements, vivid setting, and character descriptions. I admired the humor incorporated throughout this book, and I appreciated the original names given to each character and each universe in the Multiverse. There were many unique touches such as these, which made this book one of a kind.
The main message of achieving a happy balance in life was clear, and I feel it is an important message for children today, making this book especially relevant in today’s world. If you are looking for a book to read to your child, or for your child to read on their own, I highly recommend “The Thrilling Adventures of an Extremely Boring Boy.” Furthermore, this is a book I would like to read to my own child, and I feel I will enjoy reading it, and James Hannon’s future books, just as much as my child will adore hearing it. I also think any child would enjoy following along with the many illustrations included in the book. “The Thrilling Adventures of an Extremely Boring Boy” by James Hannon will have you laughing, spooked, and satisfied—and is anything but boring.
