“The Protected” by Rowena Portch is the story of forty-five-year-old Skye as she discovers both a world and a destiny for herself. When she decided to retire from her job and move to Washington, she did not expect to find a tribe of people who thought she was a legend or several tribes of people bent on either her capture or destruction. Is she a legend, and what do the evil tribes want with her? These are some of the questions that haunted Skye on her journey. Is Skye really the Spirian of legend?
On her adventures, Skye discovered a people known as Spirians, not completely human or completely spirit. The good Spirians were known as the Protected. Each Spirian had several generic gifts, such as telepathy, as well as a gift almost entirely unique to that person. Skye had the gift of healing. But then evil Spirians, called Shadows, attempted to capture her and bend her to their will. Will the Shadows succeed in capturing Skye, or will her new powers be enough to stop them?
When the book began Skye was in the hospital after being in a car crash. Skye was on a painkiller that made her hallucinate. While under the effects of what she thought was a hallucination, she saw a man who came and healed her. This man was Shanuk, the Protected elder. Shanuk gifted her with the gift of healing. With this new power, will Skye be able to defend herself from the Shadows?
I would recommend “The Protected” to people who like romance and books that include paranormal events. The book is the first in a series called “The Spirian Series.” I think this book would be most appropriate for and enjoyed by teen girls.
