“Sleeping Fatty” is book one in what is to be a new series by author RC Hancock. I’m not sure if “fairy tale” is the right phrase to use for this book but I am positive that teens as well as many adults will enjoy the book and become a fan of this new series. I know I did!
“Sleeping Fatty” is the story of Phoenix Wack, or Nix to her friends, of which she only has one at the beginning of the story. Nix does not have the greatest life… she is fat and has no real friends except for Jordan… she suffers in high school due to everyone making fun of her because of her weight… she suffers at home with a mother who takes great joy in screaming at Nix and putting her down… she suffers at work with a boss who treats her horribly and pays her next to nothing. In short, Nix does not have a pleasant time at all. Add in the fact that her father is never there, and she is basically a slave to her mother and the main caregiver for about 2 dozen cats that her mom has stolen from various neighbors in their trailer park, it is easy to see why Nix hates her life.
As Nix starts back to school after summer vacation, she finds two new and unexpected friends. Sara, one of the prettiest and richest kids in school, and Tiago, the cutest boy in school whom Nix can barely form a complete sentence around. She also finds yet another huge problem in her nightmares. Apparently, Nix has an unusual power while she is sleeping. She has to figure out very quickly how to use it so that she can save a new friend from a kidnapping, hunt down the person or thing that killed her friend’s dog, and try to speak around Tiago without making a fool of herself. Add in some demons and a mystery from days past and you end up with a great story that is full of twists and turns you won’t see coming. What will happen to Nix and her few friends is anyone’s guess but I would highly recommend reading the story to find out.
In “Sleeping Fatty,” author RC Hancock has given us a wonderful beginning to his new series. This is a very well-developed story with a great plot and very real, flawed, and likable characters. The dialogue is well-written and the book flows really well. Nix is an excellent protagonist who definitely does not fit the mold of a fairy tale princess. Yet she is one that we truly enjoy getting to know and we honestly want to see her succeed. She is a lot stronger than I expected and, given what she must go through daily, it is wonderful to watch as she grows and changes a bit through the story. In addition, Jordan, Sara, and Tiago are great characters and it is fun to watch each of them as they try to navigate their relationships with Nix and make her feel that they really do care about her and want to help.
I think that “Sleeping Fatty” by RC Hancock is an excellent book and I would highly recommend it to teens out there who want to read a good story that has just enough surprises in it to keep it interesting page after page. To be honest, I recommend it for adults as well who are looking for something a little different. I adored the book and cannot wait to see what the author has in store for Nix as well as the readers in the next installment.
