“Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer” by Spencer M. Aronfeld is about a ten-year-old girl named Sara Rose who likes to argue about everything and almost always wins. She argues with her brother, her teacher, her mom, and her friends. One day her teacher told her that she should be a lawyer. A few days later she set up a “lemonade stand” but instead of selling lemonade she sold arguments for five cents each. A man named Harold who was a lawyer came to her stand and told her a lot about what it meant to be a lawyer. She decided that was what she wanted to do.
The next day when she went to school, she found out that her class was not going to be given computers like they had been promised because the school had to cut something out of the budget, and they cut the computers. Sara and her classmates were mad. They didn’t think it was fair because they felt they could do a lot more if they had computers. Sara Rose decided to represent her class and go to the principal and argue for the class to get computers. The principal really couldn’t do anything, so eventually she had to go before the school board and argue her class’s case. You will have to read the book to see what happens.
“Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer” contains information about what lawyers do, how to become a lawyer, and different types of lawyers. There are a lot of words for what otherwise looks like a picture book. The drawings are colorful but simple and cartoonish. I would not recommend this book for kids under the age of about eight-years-old. It might be a good book for a kid who is interested in becoming a lawyer.
