“On a Snowy Day” written by Preethi Saravanakumar and illustrated by Juliana Duclos is a poetic celebration of winter and an enchanting bedtime story appealing to all age groups, from toddlers to seniors. The story is all about a little boy’s imagination and the different things he would like to do on a snowy day.

This picture book is minimalistic in nature, telling a deep, tranquil story in as few words as possible. Though I personally would like to have seen a longer story, it does seem appropriate for the style. The story presents in poetic fashion and reminds one of a captivating ballet set to calm, classical music. The author’s passion for poetry is obvious, as her words seem to float over the pages, making the story inviting, reassuring, and accepting.

Though we only have a few pages to get to know the little boy, it’s clear he knows what he wants. He enjoys the present moments and looks forward to what’s next to come. He likes to play outside in the snow, but equally anticipates that warm bowl of soup when he’s done. I love the contrast.

The illustrations are flawless and complement the story perfectly. My deepest appreciation goes to the illustrator, Juliana Duclos. Her subdued hues and minimalist style blend beautifully with the author’s verses and create their own subtle story, as effective illustrations do. The picture of the boy and his father walking in the snow with their backs to the audience gave me goosebumps as I imagined the unconditional love passing between them.

On a Snowy Day is a delightful, serene reading experience, making it a perfect story for bedtime. From toddlers to adults, all will appreciate and bask in the tranquility of this sweet, sweet story.
