“Papa’s Pastries” is a bright and colorful illustrated book that captures a young reader’s attention. The pictures are large and not too busy.

Miguel’s family doesn’t have a lot and they need so many things for the upcoming winter, so Miguel’s dad has to sell pastries to get the money they need. What Miguel learns is that there are others who are worse off than they are and it is better to give than receive.

Zoey: “I liked this book so much. I felt sorry for Miguel because his family was poor and they needed food and firewood. Miguel’s dad makes pastries to sell so they can get money. But Miguel is upset that his father is giving away all the pastries to people who need them. I think Miguel is a little stingy ‘cuz he doesn’t want to help other people out. God says you should help everyone that needs it, even if you have to give up things you want. We have to learn to share even if we don’t want to.”

Nana: “Papa’s Pastries” was a wonderful teaching book about helping out others when they need it. It was easy to read and understand. The illustrations were large and beautiful.
