“My Girlfriend Was Delivered by 2-Day Shipping” by Joshua J Piedra and illustrated by Alex Garcia is a YA romance novel that is as engaging as its title. You have the cutest boy in school, and his name is Daiki. He’s also one of the sweetest, with a heart so big and sensitive it makes you hurt for him when an untrue rumor is spread about him that makes him so lonely, he orders what he thinks is a mail-order android companion, unaware it’s a tech-driven sex doll. But what arrives in the mail by mistake is a real live girl. Let his Spring Break begin in earnest!
Piedra has created a well-developed world of high school, angst, and romance, which is typical for a YA novel. But this story is anything but typical. This is a character-driven story, with characters so well-drawn (literally, thanks to the talents of the illustrator Garcia), that they could be kids you know in real life. Daiki is especially appealing, as he is vulnerable and needy, and Miko is his perfect counterpoint, as she is assertive, sassy, direct, and a teaser. This natural opposites-attract dynamic works very well for this story.
The author obviously is an experienced writer who knows how to craft characters and situations that touch and entertain readers. This one is a real winner. You find yourself empathizing with the characters and caring about what happens to them. I also like the character arcs Piedra has created. You do witness the transformation of characters, which I think is especially important in this story.
The dialogue is engaging, the inner dialogue adds another emotional layer to the character and story, and the artwork brings everything to life as if it were an anime film you would want to watch. Best quote of the book:
What good is a big heart if I can’t give it to someone?
My favorite part is the unboxing. You wouldn’t think that so much suspense could be built into a scene where a character opens a delivered package, but that’s the talent of the writer showing through. If you are looking for a charismatic YA romance novel with a lot of heart and sass, “My Girlfriend Was Delivered by 2-Day Shipping” by Joshua J Piedra, is one you don’t want to miss.
