“If You Give a Cat a Cupcake” is written in the format of the popular “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” book. “If you give a cat a cupcake, he’ll ask for some sprinkles to go with it. When you give him sprinkles he might spill some on the floor. Cleaning up will make him hot, so you will give him a bathing suit and take him to the beach.” The book continues on until you make a full circle back to the sprinkles and cupcake again.
Max: “Cupcake! Yum!”
Cayden: “Cupcakes are real good, especially the frosting!”
Cayden: “He didn’t just spill a little bit of sprinkles on the floor; I think he spilled the whole bottle!”
Max: “Trunks!”
Cayden: “He put on swimming trunks like we do to go swimming.”
Cayden: “I wonder why they built the sand castle in the water.”
Cayden: “He sure has a lot of stuff in that bucket!”
Cayden: “Maybe I can try karate some day!”
Max: “Boat! Fish!”
Cayden: “He is getting sand all over the house! That is not good!”
Cayden: “There is the cupcake again!”
Max: “Me want cupcake!”
Cayden: “That cat is pretty funny!”
Parent’s comments:
My children love the “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” book so I figured that since “If You Give a Cat a Cupcake” by Laura Numeroff is pretty much the same concept that they would enjoy this one as well and they definitely did. They thought that the cat’s antics were hilarious and really got into it. There is a lot to look at in the illustrations and they are very entertaining. This book definitely was a winner with my children!
