I recently read the first book in this series, “Heroes of the Empire Book 1: The Cavalier” because I thought it looked interesting and I was right, it was phenomenal. I was, therefore, so excited to be asked to review the second book in this series by Israh Azizi and I have to say I was in no way disappointed. The second book is even better than the first and I loved every single page of it.
“Heroes of the Empire Book 2: The General” brings back all our favorite characters as they continue on their quest to save the kingdom. In this installment, while all the characters are included (thank goodness), the story revolves mostly around two of them. First, there is Mordon, a man who spent his entire life trying to live up to his father’s expectations and suddenly learns this man he always wanted to impress is not who Mordon thought he was. As Mordon is captured by the enemy he is forced to test everything he believes in.
Then there is Coraline, a princess who is trying to keep her kingdom and its people together as they are attacked by the enemy. As she attempts to deal with her grief over the death of her beloved uncle and is thrust into being Queen, holding the responsibility for all of these people in her hands, Coraline turns to those people inside her castle whom everyone despises and believes are conspiring against them. Coraline sends them on a journey that may turn the course of the war or may kill them all.
I must say, before anything else, that to really understand what is going on then you must read book one first. The second in the series picks up right where the first book left off and you will want to be familiar with the characters and the storyline before delving into this installment. “Heroes of the Empire Book 2: The General” starts off full of action from the very beginning and never stops. The writing in the story is outstanding. This author really knows how to create a world for her readers to enjoy. The writing is descriptive and well done. You will feel as though you are there in the enemy camp, in the castle, or in the woods facing evil right along with the characters. I love the dialogue, the storyline, and the slow building of various romances between the characters even as they focus on surviving and winning.
Each of the characters in this story is so well-developed. All the stories that begin in the first installment surrounding the lives of each of these characters are expanded in book 2 and they are even more flushed out and real to the reader. Each character has a backstory which is explained to the reader with just the right amount of detail. When those backstories implode, as some of them do right at the beginning of book two, watching the characters attempt to figure out who they really are and what they really believe in is just a thrill. The men and women are complex, well-written, and people that the reader will really come to care about.
I cannot recommend “Heroes of the Empire Book 2: The General” highly enough to readers who love a strong fantasy story. It will not matter if you are an adult or a young adult, this storyline and the characters will wrap themselves around you and pull you right in. I cannot tell you how excited I am to read the next in this series to see what happens. I hope this wonderful writer is working diligently for all her new fans and we will see the next book very soon (no pressure at all is intended). Definitely 5 Stars!!
