“I chose this book because it was about Mother’s Day and I have read lots of books about the Monster. What’s funny is the little monster flew the hat at the manager. He says, ‘Dad, these hats fly far,’ and she says, ‘You have to wear this hat now.’ (laughs) My favorite picture is the scrambled eggs and he says ‘They sure are scrambled now!’ Lick, Lick, Slurp, Slurp. It would be even funnier if they all fall asleep (and not just the mom). It’s so funny weird!”
Parent’s Note:
We own quite a collection of Mercer Mayer’s Little Monster themed books (another series), so I had a feeling that Grayce would really enjoy this one as well. What is a departure from most of Mayer’s books is that this one comes with flaps for children to open and close. Grayce enjoyed that interactive aspect. Mayer’s books are always beautifully illustrated and this book did not disappoint. The story was brought to life through the various actions and expressions of the characters, as you can tell from Grayce’s descriptions above – she even mimicked the dog licking and slurping the scrambled eggs. We both enjoyed “Happy Mother’s Day!” and Grayce told me it was worthy of five stars.
