There are so many amazing facts about Arctic Terns. Did you know that Arctic Terns have the longest migration of any animal, which is unbelievable! They fly all the way to the southern tip of South America and Antarctica to get away from the harsh winters in Alaska. You can find many more fascinating facts and information about these birds in “Growing up in Alaska: A Baby Arctic Tern” by Constance Taylor.

My favorite thing about this book is the pictures the author took while following the life of a baby Arctic Tern. It must have been really challenging to get that close without the birds being scared off. You can see up close how the baby transforms into an adult Arctic Tern.

I liked how the author told the story from the baby’s point of view, as it was growing up in the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge. The pictures and the storyline followed each other so well, it was like the baby Arctic Tern really was telling its own story. Right from the beginning, before it even hatched, it was chirping inside its egg trying to communicate with its parents.

I liked sharing with my family all the interesting facts I had learned in this book. We even spent time online, looking up the sites that are in the back of the book, to find out more information about the Arctic Tern. We even found on one of the sites that there is a Yakutat Arctic Tern Festival in Anchorage Alaska in May and June that has a wilderness speaker and a charter boat tour. Who would have thought Arctic Terns could be so fascinating?

My family and I really enjoyed, “Growing up in Alaska: A Baby Arctic Tern” by Constance Taylor. The pictures were beautiful, and it brought the reader closer to the story, by seeing first-hand how a baby Arctic Tern changes as it grows. I am really glad I got the chance to read this book and learn more about Arctic Terns and their environment.
