“Find Me In Time: Meeting Columbus” is a whirlwind adventure that transports the reader through time to witness face-to-face interactions with famous characters during pivotal historical moments. Author L.T. Caton brings to life historical events with the help of five ambitious thrill-seeking teenagers. The story begins with a group of teens playing a game of hide-and-seek in the forest when Harry discovers a mysterious ladder leading up into the trees. The ladder leads to a treehouse hidden from the naked eye. Amazed by the size and age of the structure, Harry and his friends wonder out loud who made this treehouse. Suddenly, the group is transported through time to an event that feels so real to life that it leaves goosebumps. Realizing this is no ordinary treehouse, the kids rush home to gather supplies for an expedition to witness Columbus’s first landing.
L.T.Caton’s “Find Me In Time: Meeting Columbus” is an entertaining, educational journey into major historical events going past the everyday textbook version into the enlightening human perspectives offered by both sides of the story. Too often, history is written and regurgitated from a single group perspective, unquestioned and blindly accepted. Ms. Caton boldly gives a voice to characters often overlooked throughout the retelling of history. She brings the emotions of the people involved to light with an attention to detail reflecting the harsh impact Columbus’s discovery had on the Taino people. The Taino culture is celebrated, and the darker side of Columbus’s mission unfolds with detailed illustrations and a writing style that is inviting and rich in detail.
“Find Me In Time: Meeting Columbus” by L.T. Caton engages the reader with pages full of action-packed scenes, educates students and adults with well-researched historical facts, and captivates the reader with the emotions her story brings to life. Ms. Caton expertly times her action scenes, bringing the characters back to safety yet leaving the reader on a cliffhanger, hungering for more. I was impressed that a book geared toward middle school-age children made me question what I learned throughout my education. I look forward to reading more from this author and plan to incorporate her “Find Me In Time” series into our home library.
