“Eli the Bipolar Bear” is a story about a bear who struggles with this mood disorder.  His emotions were always more intense than those around him and his moods could change like the flip of a switch.  No one seemed to understand him.  However, Wise Old Bear determines that he has Bipolar Disorder and sets Eli on a path that helps him to improve his life quality.

Cayden:  “I had never heard of bipolar disorder before.  Eli’s friends didn’t know what it was either because they didn’t know why he did those things he did like be mean, or sad, all of the time.  The Old Bear helped him be better though so he could make friends.  I liked that he was happy in the end.”

Parent’s comments:
“Eli the Bipolar Bear” by Sharon Bracken is a good book to read to a child to help to explain to them about bipolar. It would come in handy if someone close to them suffered from the disorder.  Eli the Bear’s story is presented in a basic and easy-to-understand format allowing a child to fully absorb the information presented.
