“Doubloon Cove: The Secret of the Templars’ Satchel” by Kelly Novak is a fresh, exciting YA mystery detective novel with a secret weapon: humor. This creative story will have you invested from the start, and you’ll be on the edge of your seat all the way through. This is the second book of the author’s Doubloon Series.  The prologue starts us with a brief tidbit to lure us in with a glimpse into the year 1307, then skips up to modern times, where the young teenager Stacy learns that her father is the victim of a kidnapping. The ransom demand is not money per se, it’s that she needs to turn over the location of a secret treasure belonging to the Freemasons. She gets the Doubloon Cove gang to help return her father. And this is just the beginning. Fans of stories about the Illuminati and conspiracies will love this one because they are out to get Stacy and her friends.

Novak has crafted the perfect action mystery tale for young readers.  The pace is quick, the adventures are big, and the characters are realistically drawn in this fantastic world. The illustrations add a cinematic feel to the book and heighten the action and characters. Also included are mysterious puzzles to solve, symbols, and a map. Even the chapter titles are enticing, like The Escape, The Old Burying Ground, and Tomb Raiders. There is an energy to the narrative that keeps you hooked, a bit of the supernatural, and the dialogue is lively and funny at times too.

There are a lot of reasons to love this book–an important one being the friendship between the characters. They stick together in this tense, dangerous time. The classic good vs. evil elements are here, as well as high stakes and danger at every turn. Another thing that I like is that the action gets started right away, which I think is appealing to young readers.

The quest is on. This is one treasure hunt you won’t soon forget, and Novak’s fans will be recommending this one to their friends. If you’re looking for a book full of adventure and heart, “Doubloon Cove: The Secret of the Templars’ Satchel” by Kelly Novak is a must-read.
