“Common Sense Parenting of Toddlers and Preschoolers” is a 3-disc audio book with a running time of 3 hours and 40 minutes (abridged edition). The narrator on the CDs has a clear and pleasant voice and was a good choice to present the book.

The material on the CDs is geared toward parents with children in the age range of two to five. On the first disc the issues discussed are: understanding child development, setting expectations for your child, ways to nurture your child, your role as a teacher, and using consequences to change behavior. On the second disc we learn about giving reasons kids understand, using praise effectively and often, teaching social skills, teaching before problems occur, when and how to use time-out, and dealing with your child’s misbehavior. The third disc includes chapters on making a plan to stay calm, teaching your child self-control, enhancing family life, toilet training, trips, bedtime and meals, and your own parenting plan.

I found Barnes & York’s advice to be sound and from experience know that much of it is effective as I currently employ a lot of the tips already. I did pick up some new ideas in the behavioral section though that I will begin to start using. The information that the CDs present is very straightforward and easy to understand. Overall, I recommend this audio book to parents of young child in the target age range, most particularly first-time parents. I think that there is a lot of beneficial advice in “Common Sense Parenting of Toddlers and Preschoolers” that will help you to be the best parent that you can be.
