Voices of Dragons
“Voices of Dragons,” by Carrie Vaughn, is the story of 17-year-old Kay, whose accident on the border between the U.S. and Dragon (the dragons’ territory) results in her breaking the most important rule of life in the small Montana town of Silver River: Don’t cross the border. Can her secret friendship with a dragon named Artegal stop an international crisis? Or will it be the cause of it? Dragons and humans have coexisted since WWII, when the dragons suddenly reappeared from hibernation in the far north. A treaty was created to keep the peace, and no one - human or dragon - could cross the border between the two species’ territories. But when Kay slips during a secret rock climb and ends up on the wrong side of the border, she realizes that it is possible for the two species to communicate. But when her friendship with Artegal starts to threaten her already shaky love life, Kay questions whether it’s worth breaking the law. During one of Kay’s visits to Dragon, a malfunction in a border patrol jet results in the pilot crash landing in Dragon. It might have been nothing, except the military begins using the airspace over Dragon to test new jets, nicknamed the Dragonslayers. Will the event spark a war? What will Kay have to sacrifice to restore peace? And what mind-blowing discovery will she make? I liked the main character, Kay, because she was a strong female character, and although she sometimes questioned whether or not she was doing the right thing, once she made up her mind, she never faltered in her conviction. I would recommend “Voices of Dragons” by Carrie Vaughn to people who like fantasy, adventure, and a little romance. The book took place in what modern-day Earth would look like with dragons living in it. I give this book 4 stars, but if it hadn’t had so much romance, I would have given it 5. It was a very interesting concept and a fun and easy-to-read book. |
