When the six Herdmans children came around anyone or anything, you can be sure there would be trouble. All six of the children told lies, stole from others and were just generally mean. Each year their church put on a Christmas pageant by the children of the church and this year was no different, except the Herdmans children showed up and decided they would be in the pageant and do things their way. Everyone was stunned as they assigned each other the major roles in the pageant and they didn’t even know what the story of the birth of Jesus was about! Wait till you see how the pageant turns out.

“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is very colorful with bright pictures and it is very easy to read.  Each child can relate to another child that might have some of these behaviors.

Zoey:

Hmmm… I don’t know many kids like this, but the kids who live next to my Nana. They fight all the time, steal from neighbors and are mean to other kids and pets. I feel sorry for them because no one pays any attention to them or even goes outside to watch them play. In this book, the six kids are mean to everyone and one day they show up at Sunday School and take over the Christmas pageant. They didn’t even know the story of the birth of Jesus or anything. So other kids had to tell them the story and they didn’t like all the goodie-goodie stuff in the story so they decided to do the pageant their way. All the kids and parents were very scared at what would happen. Even if the Herdmans did the pageant in a different way, they learned about the meaning of Christmas. This story tells me you should be nice to everyone even if they don’t act the way you think they should.

Nana:

Although a very unusual story, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” had a great lesson for Zoey. She learned that even though some kids or even adults don’t behave all they time, you should give them a chance and be their friend.
