Cayden’s comments:

“This book is about a place called Ireland that we looked up on a map.  I didn’t know about Ireland before.  It is an alphabet book and for each letter there is something about Ireland.  I had some trouble with this book.  I couldn’t read a lot of the words.  When we read it together I still didn’t know what the words meant sometimes.  My favorite page was the one with the Wolfhound.  That was for the letter ‘W’ in the book.”

Parent’s comments:

Before we started reading “Irish Alphabet,” I showed my son where Ireland was on a map and he was excited to learn more.  However, we found that much of the language and the concepts used in the book are very difficult for a young child to comprehend.

For instance, for the letter “N”, it states:

“N is for mysterious Newgrange,
A passage-grave or tomb
Where Cuchulainn was conceived
In its dreamy, cold stone rooms.”

The age group listed for the book is 4-8, but I would recommend it for very high end of that group.  I think “Irish Alphabet” would be a neat book to teach children of their Irish heritage once a child is old enough to comprehend the language used.
