“Seekers: Spirits in the Stars” by Erin Hunter is the story of four bears, Toklo, a grizzly bear; Kallik, a polar bear; Lusa, a black bear; and Ujurak, a shape-shifter whose natural shape is a grizzly cub.  After wandering across the ice for several days, the four came to an island of polar bears.  The island bears had become sick and some had even died because of a mysterious flatface (human) poison that had been leaking into the sea and poisoning the seals.  Can the bears stop the poison leak, or will the bears eventually starve to death?

When the four came to Star Island they found a mother polar bear, on the verge of death, and her cub.  Sadly there was nothing Kallik and the others could do for her.  When the mother died from eating a poisoned seal, Kallik decided to adopt the cub.  But there was a danger to that.  What if the other bears on Star Island found out?  Will they take the cub back and drive Kallik of the island?

When the four came to Star Island, the spirits in the stars had vanished.  There was not a star to be seen in the sky.  It was as if the spirits had died and their destroyer had come back to choke the life out of the bears.  Ujurak had been having dreams of his mother Ursa.  Through these dreams he learned of the location of a mysterious cave with drawings on the walls that depicted the four bears as well as many other pictures.  From the cave Ujurak he saw a strange, spiny metal tower that he knew he would have to destroy to bring back the spirits.  Can Ujurak and his friends destroy the tower, or will the spirits remain hidden forever?

A neat bonus to the book is that there is a cool Seekers’ website listed that has all sorts of interesting information on the characters and the author.  Erin Hunter is actually not one but four people.  They all love bears and cats and together wrote the “Warriors” series.

I would recommend “Seekers: Spirits in the Stars” to people who like bears and adventure.  Once you pick up this book you won’t want to put it down until you finish it.  It was a very adventurous book and was also fast-paced.  The book is the sixth, and final, book in the Seekers series.
