Rhymes with CupidAnna Humphrey
What would you do if you fell in love and you had sworn not to?; especially after your last boyfriend cheated on you with your best friend on Valentine’s Day. Elyse Phillips is just an ordinary teenage girl. She works at the mall, her best friend is a girl named Dina, and she’s recovering from her ex-boyfriend Matt Love. When, who shows up next door but a funny, kind, and cute boy named Patrick, Elyse knows this Valentine’s Day may be different. Patrick had left his town to help his grandfather after his wife died. Somehow fate had it so that Patrick and Elyse both worked at the mall. Elyse knows she has no way to avoid this charming boy when he comes in to buy a pen and flirts with her. Not wanting to fall in love again, Elyse pushes Patrick away by trying to get him to like Dina. Elyse’s walls start to crumble when her mom asks Patrick to give Elyse driving lessons to help her pass her test for her driver’s license. Everyday after work she spends time with Patrick, driving, and she starts to realize that maybe not all boys are the same. Maybe she should give him a chance but there’s still that uncertainty nagging at the back of her mind. How is Patrick going to prove to her that he’s different and won’t break her heart? Anna Humphrey is a very good writer in my opinion. Her writing is easy to read and her characters are easy to follow. She doesn’t start immediately by introducing all the characters and I believe that that is a good thing. Often when you introduce them on the first few pages it can get confusing, so by not doing that with her writing it was easy to follow and understand. She makes Patrick appear to be a guy who just wants to help everybody he can and Elyse is a girl who is closed off - shy - and doesn’t want to fall in love again. I liked “Rhymes with Cupid” and I would highly recommend it, because, even though you are not always wondering what’s going to happen next, the author keeps it going just enough to keep you reading. Finally, I think that most teenage girls would like this book as it is from a female’s point of view and it has to do with love. |
