“The Seer and the Scribe: Spear of Destiny” by G. M. Dyrek is the story of Volmar, a young scribe working with the monks at the monastery of Disibodenberg.  When several murders occur at the monastery, Volmar tasks himself with finding the murderer.  Through this he met Hildegard, a girl gifted with the power of future sight and the ability to converse with the dead.  The two of them then set out to find the murderer and bring him to justice.  Who was the killer and would he strike again?

When Hildegard was off in a field near the monastery, she met the ghost of Brother Arnoul.  Brother Arnoul had been killed when he had tried to prevent a fellow monk from escaping the monastery with a rare and valuable book.  The perpetrator had pushed Brother Arnoul who had hit his head on a rock and died.  Although Brother Arnoul was a monk during his life, he would not rest until his murderer had been brought to justice.  Can Volmar and Hildegard find the murderer before he strikes again, or will the monastery be doomed to a history of bloodshed and treachery?

The book was a very fun read, but could be quite gruesome at times.  This would definitely not be a good book for the faint of heart.  Because it was a mystery story it was fun to try and figure out who the villain was before the characters themselves realized it.

I would recommend this book to people who like murder mysteries.  The book could sometimes be kind of distracting and hard to read because there were a lot of footnotes (98 in all).  “The Seer and the Scribe: Spear of Destiny” is the first in a series and I can’t wait to read the next one.
