“The Berenstain Bears and the Nutcracker” by Jan and Mike Berenstain takes place at Christmastime.  After Brother, Sister and Honey opened all of their presents, Sister Bear saw an oddly wrapped present.  She picked it up and read the label “for Brother, Sister and Honey - from Santa.”  She opened it and inside was a toy soldier nutcracker.  They cracked a few nuts but then put him away while they got down to business playing with their new toys, games and videos.  Soon they got bored with the videos and computer games.  They complained to Mama and Papa that they had nothing to do.  Mama Bear said that they had all of these new toys to play with, but Brother Bear still complained that they were bored.  Then Papa Bear told them to go use their imagination.  And then they asked how to use their imaginations.  Papa said “you just pretend” and suggested playing pirates or space grizzlies or cowbears.

Sister grabbed the nutcracker.  That’s what they would play! They went up into the attic and found great costumes to play in.  They played and played the Nutcracker until Mama finally called them for dinner.

I would recommend this book to other Berenstain Bear lovers and to people who like the Nutcracker.  “The Berenstain Bears and the Nutcracker” gives the very basics of the Nutcracker story.
